How Toph's bloated blob is made

Sat Aug 13, 2011, 7:59 AM

Hello watchers <3 You gave me the signs so here I am with this (simple?) guide in how Toph's hair was done.

Can I also say something unrelated.. I think dA should really upgrade this journal thing with an easy image uploader function? so I don't have to upload in another database and imgsrc every photo in here. After all, having pictures in a journal is one of the few attractions and entitlement to a paid subscriber besides a customize journal, right?

Ok that aside D:

I used many unorthodox ways to do my costumes so hmm.. please don't laugh orz ...

So i bought a straw bowler hat from Daiso (for only SG$2), and then wrapped strips of paper around it until is all covered, like a half sphere but fuglier. Please use black coloured paper. And of course, please buy a hat accordingly to your head proportion. Don't repeat the mistake of making it too big like mine =_=

This is how the underside looks like. I arrowed a wire-comb there because it is how I secured this blob to the main wig later.

Ok now, either you buy hair wefts or ripped out the wefts from a wig. I did the latter. Sewed them to the hat's lining. Make sure the hair is long enough to reach the other end of the hat. Then glued the ends of the wefts to the opposite side.

I placed an image of how the hair looks like from the back, very untidy and not how hair will naturally be (wrong context for a cartoon char LOL) but.. what are the odds of having a photo of your back taken, really? unless intended.

Also, while I kept going over with wefts, I sprayed them like f crazy with Mandom's G-spray. The fiber will stiffen and it'll warrant you from unkemptness.

Just in case you have trouble securing the ends of the hair wefts to the hat and because I didn't take a picture, I'll show you an example of how I did my Ventus wig and what you could do to bound the loose fiber with white glue. You can add volume to a wig with this method too like I did with ventus.

Usually you have to wait a night for the glue to completely dry but because I ran out of time and since it doesn't have to look pretty inside the hat I used white glue and then sticked A LOT of masking tape on LOL. You can try using hot glue or UHU glue too.

There. Done. Easy? 8D Sewed a wire-comb to tuck into the main wig. I think having a detachable blob on your head is better too? The main wig is untouched and you can reuse for other cosplays. Quite sturdy I say. Unless you do a body-flip..

My face after seeing a rock hits songster69's camera lens haha my bending skill is terrific.
